Fireworks Questions and Answers

Help your family have a safe fireworks holiday
The following are frequently asked questions regarding the use of fireworks. If your questions are not answered here, please contact us at (360) 576-1195.

When can I legally use fireworks?
It is legal to use common fireworks in Clark County on the following dates during the following times:
  • June 28th between the hours of 12:00 p.m. (noon) and 11:00 p.m.
  • June 29th through July 3rd from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.
  • July 4th between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 a.m. (midnight)
  • July 5 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.
What kinds of fireworks are legal and what kinds are not legal?
Legal fireworks include any of the devices sold from licensed fireworks stands or tents in Clark County. Typically, these consist of sparklers, fountains, ground spinners, smoke devices, roman candles, helicopter-type aerial spinners, etc... Examples of illegal fireworks include sky rockets, missile-type rockets, firecrackers, bottle rockets, and chasers. A good rule of thumb to follow is that if the fireworks were not purchased at a fireworks stand or tent in Clark County, it should be considered illegal.

Can I create my own fireworks from the legal devices I purchased?
No. Creation of any type of home-made firework device is a violation of federal law, not to mention extremely hazardous. The devices sold at stands have been deemed safe to use. Any changes to these or the creation of your own firework device can lead to serious bodily injury or death.

Can my children buy fireworks themselves or do I have to be with them?
A person must be at least 16 years old to legally purchase fireworks - and photo identification is required. Children under this age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

What should I do with any unused fireworks that I still have after July 5?
Any leftover fireworks should be placed in an area that can be locked so that children do not have access to them. As always, also be sure that matches and lighters are out of reach of children. If you would like to dispose of your unused fireworks, you may take them to the Clark County Fire Marshal's office located at 505 NW 179th Street. If you have large amounts or are concerned about safely transporting fireworks, call the Clark County Fire Marshal's office and arrange to have them transported. You may reach the fire marshal's office by dialing (360) 397-2186 ext. 3394.

Fireworks safety tips

Before you Light Fireworks - Be Prepared!
Purchase only legal fireworks, available at licensed stands. Buy only the quantity that you will use. Ensure the safety of pets. Keep a bucket of water nearby in which to place all used fireworks. Have a water hose or fire extinguisher nearby to put out stray sparks. Clear a level area in which to use your fireworks away from things that can burn.

When Lighting Fireworks - Be Safe!
Only adults should light fireworks. Use eye protection, wear safety goggles. Light one at a time and move away quickly. Keep spectators at a safe distance. Use only outdoors, away from anything that can burn. To prevent injuries, follow the directions on the labels carefully.

After you Finish - Be Responsible!
Be considerate of your neighbors. Clean up all debris when finished. Duds can be dangerous; if a fireworks item does not light or fire, an adult should wait at least five minutes, approach it carefully, and place it in a bucket of water. Make sure unused fireworks, matches, and lighters are out of the sight and reach of children.
