Smoke Alarms

• Check smoke alarms monthly (push test button and listen for alarm)
  
• Change your batteries at least once per year
  

Escape Plans

• Have two clear exits from every room
  
• Draw and practice your escape plan with other occupants
  
• Have an escape ladder if you are above the first story
  
• Always close doors behind you to block smoke and stop the spread of fire
  
• Determine a meeting place so that you will know where your family members are and if they're safe

Clear Access / Doors

• Keep access to your apartment clear with storage items away from doors and windows
  
• Keep all combustible storage out of stairwells
  

Address

• Make sure your address is clearly visible from the street for emergency responders
  
• Post clearly visible address and phone number inside apartment for visitors and babysitters
  

Fire Lanes

• Areas marked Fire Lane or red/yellow curbs must remain clear at all times. It is critical for emergency responders to have quick and unobstructed access to the entire complex
  

Heating Equipment

• Provide at least 18 inches of clearance when using baseboard or portable heaters
  

Electrical Safety

• Do not use extension cords on a long term basis instead of permanent wiring.
  
• Avoid use of extension cords where they may be tripped over.
  
• Unplug small appliances when not in use
  
• Inspect circuit breakers, tripped breakers may be a sign of serious electrical problems
  

Safety First

• Don't leave candles unattended
  
• use candles in an open area away from combustibles
  
• Don't leave children alone with lit candles
  
• Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children.
  
• Turn off stovetop; don't leave food cooking on the stove unattended.
