8/3/2016 Trevor Fleshman promoted to Lieutenant. During the Board meeting on 8/2/16, volunteer Firefighter Trevor Fleshman was promoted to Lieutenant and sworn by the Board Chair Dean Bloemke.
8/3/2016 Volunteer Recruit Graduation Ceremony. Last evening, a recruit class graduation ceremony was conducted. Eleven of fourteen volunteer firefighters were present and received congratulations from Asst. Chief Shawn Newberry who presented certificates. Board of Commissioners Chair Dean Bloemke then conducted a swearing-in ceremony for the new firefighters.

7/20/2016 Asst. Chief Maurer Executive Fire Officer Program Graduation Recognition. At the Board meeting last night Assistant Chiief Kristan Maurer was honored for her graduation from the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer program. Guest speaker Clark County Councilor Julie Olsen spoke of women in public service and in the fire service and offered her congratulations to Chief Maurer. 3/29/2016 Chief Green announces the hiring of Dave Schmitke (well-known Portland/Vancouver TV news and media person) for the position of Public Education-Public Information Officer. Mr. Schmitke will start employment on April 1st. Fire District 6 is extremely pleased to have acquired the services of someone with the talents and expertise of Dave.
2016 Parade of Bands. The 2016 parade is on Saturday, May 21, 2016. Members of the District have been assisting with the parade for 42 years. 3/1/2016 Board Declares Miscellaneous Equipment as Surplus. Last evening, the Board declared a list of miscellaneous equipment as surplus, and directed that a "Sealed Bid" process be initiated. The process opens today, March 1st and closes on March 15th at 4:00 pm. Individual Item #'s must be bid separately and contain bidders name, mailing address, phone number and dollar amount which is to be placed within a sealed envelope and provided to Station 61, 8800 NE Hazel Dell Ave. (main office). |1/6/2016 Kristan Maurer Promoted to Assistant Chief. Battalion Chief Kristan Maurer is promoted to Assistant Chief and is nowresponsible for Logistics and Planning with Clark County Fire District 6. Chief Maurer has served since with the District since 1999, beginning as a firefighter/paramedic and promoting through the ranks. Kristan has an associate degree in fire science from Portland Community College, a bachelor degree from Central WashingtonUniversity and is currently working on her Masters degree in public administration. She completed the four-year Executive Fire Officer Program at the National Fire Academy.|
12/14/2015 Chief Richard Streissguth. Fire District 6 is mourning the loss of Richard (Dick) Streissguth.We have lost a great friend, mentor and leader. Chief Streissguth passed away Monday morning after serving our agency and his community for more than 61 years. Dick began volunteering with the District when it was formed in 1954. He served as a firefighter, Assistant Chief and became full-time Fire Chief in 1981. He retired in 1993, but continued serving as Secretary to the Board of Fire Commissioners.
A Memorial Service for Chief Richard (Dick) Streissguth is planned for Tuesday, December 22nd at 2:00 p.m. at Crossroads Community Church, 7708 NE 78th Street, Vancouver.
12/29/2015 Donation Consideration. The family of Richard (Dick) Streissguth has requested donations be made to "CLARK COUNTY FD6 CADET PROGRAM” at Riverview Community Bank as a way of honoring Chief Streissguth. Please be sure to enter the name above in upper case letters on checks to assure proper deposits are made. Funds will be utilized to assist cadet students from local high schools who go on a field trip to New York and other needs within the specialized fire training program. The Streissguth Family and FD6 thank you for your consideration.

12/5/2014 Station Signs Declared Surplus Equipment. The Board declared three lighted station signs (double sided) as surplus equipment and will conduct a “live” auction for each during their December 16th Regular Board meeting which starts at 7:30 pm. Bidding will be conducted on each sign separately, with a starting point of $100. Signs are currently located at Station 62 (Felida). The Board asks that winning bidders not place signs outside of structures unless the Fire District information is removed. 10/20/2014 Dick Streissguth's Honored at his 60th Anniversary. At the Board meeting last night, Dick Streissguth was honored by the Board, Chief Green and others for his 60 years of service to Fire District 6 and its citizens. His wife Maralyn and members of his family were present for the ceremony. Dick started with the department when it was formed in 1954 and eventually served as the Fire Chief until 1993. 9/3/2014 Rebecca & Cory Watson - Jackson Cy Foundation Honored at Board Meeting. At the Board meeting last night, Rebecca Watson was honored for her work in organizing the Jackie Cy Felida 5K run fundraiser to benefit the public education program at Fire District 6. The run is in memory of Rebecca's son Jackson Cy who passed away last year. FD6 were present at the event as run participants, staffing the first aid station and providing tours of apparatus. The event raised over $23,000 which was donated to the District and has already purchased a robotic Fire Engine used for safety education for children. The remaining funds are being used to partially fund the upgrade to each FD6 fire station sign which will include an digital LED board providing safety messages, educational events and important community messages and news. The District is extremely grateful to Rebecca and her family for their support.

7/17/2014 Lifejacket Donations Needed. A recent spike in temperature in Clark County has created an increase in drowning’s unseen in years. These drownings may have been avoided if life jackets were worn. For the past 3 years, Fire District 6, Clark County Safe Kids and the Clark County Sheriff have stocked a life jacket loaner station at Klineline Pond. The lifejackets are becoming very worn and their are not enough of them for the need. Please drop off lifejacket donations at the fire station at 8800 NE Hazel Dell Ave (new or gently used please). Your help and support are greatly appreciated.

3/25/2014 Board Workshop to be held this evening. The Board of Commissioners will hold a workshop this evening beginning at 6:00 p.m. Topics for the workshop include: review of policies, Volunteer program, EMS District 2, a financial forecast, Division reports, apparatus replacement schedule and the 2008 Strategic Plan.
3/5/2014 Carter Coval presented the Lifesaving Award. At the Board of Commissioners meeting last night, Chief Green presented Carter Coval the Lifesaving Award. On the evening of December 27, 2013 Carter Coval was working as a lifeguard at Lakeshore Athletic Club. At 8:00 pm he noticed a young boy floating face down in the water. Carter immediately jumped to action, pulling the young boy from the water while another lifeguard called 911. Carter remained calm and began the CPR protocol as he had been trained. He checked the boy’s pulse and airway and started rescue breathing. After four or five rescue breaths, the boy inhaled spontaneously and began coughing up fluid. The patient gained full consciousness about a minute before Fire District 6 firefighter/paramedics arrived.
Fire District 6 personnel noted Carter’s confidence and professionalism during such a stressful moment. Thanks to Carter the young boy is home and doing well. Click an image below to see a larger version. At right, Carter is flanked by his parents.

12/27/2013 Countywide Burn Ban Lifted. The Southwest Clean Air Agency has lifted the countywide Stage I Burn Ban effective today at 1:00 p.m.

12/17/2013 Lifesaving Awards Presented by Fire Chief. At the Board meeting this evening, Fire Chief Green presented Lifesaving Awards to Rhett and Karen Burbank for their decisive actions on October 24, 2013 which contributed to saving the life of their neighbor.

12/4/2013 Clark County Draft/Proposed Panhandling Ordinance. Clark County has made available an Ordinance under consideration for adoption. The Ordinance would regulate Panhandling (solicitation of money) and adopt a definition of pedestrian and vehicle interference, place time, place and manner restrictions in certain locations, and define offenses and penalties for panhandling. 9/4/2013 Annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest. Fire District 6 and the Hazel Dell / Salmon Creek Business Association partner each year to hold a Fire Prevention Poster Contest. 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade art students at schools in Fire District 6 prepare a poster following the contest rules and this year's theme: Prevent Kitchen Fires. The theme each year coincides with the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) Fire Prevention Month theme.
It’s a creative and fun way to teach fire safety to students. Posters will be picked up at each school on Thursday, October 3rd. Winners will be selected and notified Friday, October 4th. First, second and third place winners from each grade level, a grand prize winner, and honorable mentions from each elementary school will be awarded prizes at an Awards Luncheon held at the District's Headquarters Station on Wednesday, October 9, 2013.

9/11/2013 Tribute. In remembrance of and to honor the 343 fireifighters killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, Fire District 6 firefighters placed 343 United States flags at each fire station. Click the image for a larger version.

Robert W. Hamel
August 5th, 1953 - July 25th, 2013
Clark County Fire District 6 Firefighter Robert Hamel of Vancouver, WA, passed away on July 25, 2013 after a very hard battle with cancer.
Robert was born August 5th, 1953 in Yakima, WA. He attended AC Davis High School in Yakima where he met his bride, Renae. He was also a star athlete in cross country and track. Robert and Renae graduated in 1972.
After high school, Robert served for six years in the Army National Guard and worked for Alcoa Aluminum in Vancouver, WA. Robert also served as a volunteer firefighter while attending Portland Community College where he earned his degree in Fire Science. He was hired as a full-time firefighter at Clark County Fire District 6 in May, 1996 where he worked until taking medical leave in September, 2012.
A memorial service was held on Wed., July 31, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Crossroads Community Church, 7708 NE 78th St., Vancouver, WA 98662.
